Chapter 5 - Dead in the Water

The twin diesel engines abruptly sputtered, choked, and died.
The console displays went black, replaced by a single, flashing red prompt: REMOTE FIRMWARE SHUTDOWN COMPLETE.
The silence that descended was suffocating, broken only by the cold lap of ocean waves against the dead hull. The boat began to drift helplessly in the swell, five miles off the rocky coast, shrouded in thick sea fog.
"The engine management system," Ethan hissed, slamming his fist onto the steering wheel. "Victoria didn't just track the boat; she bought access to the manufacturer's satellite telemetry."
Elena came fully onto the deck, wrapping a blanket around Lily. The temperature was plunging rapidly as night fell over the Atlantic. "Can you bypass the electronic starter?"
"The fuel injectors are locked by the ECU. It's an encrypted kill switch," Ethan said, ripping open the engine bay hatch. He stared down at the massive, modern marine engines, feeling useless against digital locks.
Lily walked over to the open hatch, staring down curiously. "Daddy, is the green light supposed to blink?"
Ethan looked down. On the side of the secondary fuel filter sat a small, magnetic parasite box that hadn't been there when he serviced the boat last week. A tiny red fiber-optic lead ran into the main fuse panel.
It wasn't a remote shutdown from the manufacturer. Someone had physically tampered with the boat while it sat docked at their private slip.
"We had a traitor in the village," Ethan realized, his voice dropping. "The marina mechanic."
Before he could pull the wires, the rhythmic, heavy thump of helicopter rotors vibrated through the mist above them. A Sikorsky S-76 helicopter descended through the low cloud ceiling, hovering fifty feet over the water. Its blinding belly-mounted spotlight illuminated the dead boat like an operating table.
A cable dropped from the side door of the aircraft.
Two men in black tactical gear slid down the rope, landing heavily onto the bow of Ethan's boat, assault rifles leveled directly at his chest.
A third figure stepped to the edge of the helicopter door above, holding a megaphone. The voice was unmistakable—sharp, imperious, and dripping with venom.

"Step away from the family, Ethan. If you draw that weapon, the child gets thrown into the freezing Atlantic."
