Chapter 14 - The Sinking Cage

Ethan hit the wooden dock hard, the breath tearing from his lungs as his shoulder absorbed the brutal impact.
Victoria rolled onto the wet planks five feet away, groaning, but scrambled instantly for a discarded pipe on the dock. She swung it wildly, catching Ethan across the ribs.
Ethan grunted in pain, rolling through the blow, grabbing her wrist, and twisting it until the iron clattered against the wood. He pinned her to the dock, his hand wrapped around her throat, rain pouring down over their bleeding faces.
"The timer..." Victoria choked out, blood bubbling on her lips, a triumphant, psychotic grin breaking across her face. "The power cutoff... triggers the failsafe... the cable drops!"
Ethan's head whipped toward the crane.
With the power severed, the electromagnetic crane lock had disengaged. The heavy steel container was sliding rapidly down its guide cables, splashing violently into the dark waters of the Hudson Bay.
"Lily!" Ethan roared.
He released Victoria, not caring if she lived or died, and sprinted down the length of the wooden pier.
He reached the edge of the dock and dove headfirst into the freezing, oil-slicked waters of the bay.
The cold hit him like a physical wall, driving the air from his lungs. The murky salt water blinded him, but he kicked furiously, diving deeper into the blackness toward the sinking yellow silhouette of the container.
The steel box had already sunk ten feet below the surface, air bubbles violently erupting from its rubber seals as it settled into the bay mud.
Ethan reached the container. He grabbed the heavy industrial door handle. It was secured by a rusted manual steel dog-latch.
He pulled with everything he had. The metal wouldn't budge.
His lungs burned for oxygen, his vision darkening as the crushing cold pressed against his chest. Through the small reinforced viewing port of the container, he saw Lily.
The water inside had already reached the little girl's chest. She was standing on top of a wooden crate, clutching her pink backpack above the water, her small face pressed against the glass, her blue eyes wide with desperate terror.
She saw him.
She pressed her tiny hand against the inside of the glass.
Ethan felt a surge of adrenaline so intense it shattered every biological limit in his body. He braced both boots against the container's steel ribs, gripped the rusted latch with both hands, and pulled with a roar that tore bubbles from his throat.

With a sickening screech of bending steel, the rusted latch gave way.
