Chapter 15 - The Unbroken Horizon

Ethan ripped the heavy steel door open against the rushing water.
He lunged inside, grabbing Lily by her waist and hauling her into his chest. She wrapped her small arms around his neck with an iron grip that nothing on earth could break.
Ethan kicked hard against the sinking container, shooting upward through the dark, icy water toward the surface.
They broke the surface of the Hudson Bay with a desperate, gasping splash.
Ethan rolled onto his back, holding Lily high above the freezing waves. Lily coughed violently, vomiting water, but then drew in a huge, ragged breath of night air and began to sob against his chest.
"I've got you, Lily! I've got you!" Ethan choked out, weeping openly as he kicked toward the wooden pilings of the dock.
Above them, the night sky was suddenly illuminated by the blinding red and blue flashing lights of a dozen law enforcement vehicles. Federal tactical teams swarmed the pier, having tracked the emergency transponder signal Ethan had secretly activated when he destroyed the junction box.
Elena was already at the edge of the pier, having broken free from the office, flanked by two rescue officers.
"Ethan! Lily!" Elena screamed, kneeling on the wet dock, reaching down with both hands.
The rescue team lowered a retrieval ladder. Ethan climbed out of the water, carrying Lily in his arms. The moment his boots hit the solid wood of the pier, he collapsed to his knees, wrapping both arms around Elena and Lily, pulling them into an unbroken, trembling embrace.
Behind them, federal marshals were securing Victoria Pierce in heavy steel cuffs, leading her away into the pouring rain. Her threats were swallowed by the wail of sirens.
Lily buried her wet face into the crook of Ethan's neck, shivering violently beneath the heavy wool blanket a paramedic threw around them. In her tiny, frozen hand, she still clutched her pink backpack.
She reached into the side pocket with trembling fingers and pulled out something that had remained safe through the darkness and the deep water.
It was the faded hospital photograph of Elena holding her as a newborn.
Lily pressed the wet photograph against Ethan's bleeding cheek.
"Daddy," she whispered, her voice shaking with cold, but full of pure, absolute certainty. "You came back for me."
Ethan held his daughter tighter against his heart, tears washing the salt and blood from his face as he kissed her forehead, then leaned down to press his forehead against Elena's.

The glass towers of Manhattan stood tall across the dark bay, glittering with billions of dollars of cold, dead light. But Ethan didn't look at them. He turned his back on the city forever, his eyes fixed on the two women in his arms.
"I will always come back for you," Ethan whispered into the morning wind. "Always."
