Chapter 1 - The Shadow on the Shore

The tranquility of the Maine coastline shattered on a crisp November morning. Ethan stood by the white-picket garden fence, watching Lily skip along the rocky perimeter with their golden retriever, Barnaby. The salt breeze was bitter, carrying an unnatural stillness that pricked the hairs on the back of his neck.
A silver courier van, devoid of commercial markings, rolled slowly down the gravel driveway. The vehicle idled near the mailbox, its tinted windshield hiding the driver completely.
Ethan stiffened, stepping down off the porch instinctively. He gestured for Lily to head inside. "Lily, go find Mommy in the kitchen. Now, sweetheart."
Lily picked up on the sudden tautness in her father's tone. She dropped her seashells into her jacket pocket and ran up the steps, her yellow boots thudding against the wooden deck. Elena met her at the screen door, her eyes immediately darting past the child toward Ethan.
The van's window slid down two inches. A gloved hand dropped a thick, wax-sealed envelope into the open wooden mailbox before the engine revved, tires spitting gravel as it reversed down the lane and sped away into the coastal fog.
Ethan walked forward, his pulse pounding against his temples. He opened the mailbox and pulled out the envelope. The paper was heavy, expensive linen stock. Embossed across the back was the seal of the Pierce Family Estate—a crest his grandfather had decommissioned forty years ago.
Inside lay a single photograph. It was fresh, printed on modern high-gloss paper. It showed the exterior of their secluded seaside home, taken through a high-magnification telephoto lens. Penciled across the back in a neat, venomous hand were the words:
*You cannot bury forty billion dollars in the sand, Ethan. Your father's real debt has come due.*

Before Ethan could breathe, a shrill electronic screech tore through the house behind him, followed by the terrifying sound of glass shattering in the rear garden.
