Chapter 7

Later that morning, while Clara was out attending a high-society luncheon to maintain appearances, Julian made his way up to the nursery. Lily was sitting on the rug by the window, peacefully coloring in a picture book with a box of crayons, her white stuffed bunny propped up against the baseboard beside her. She looked up as the door opened, a cautious, hopeful look crossing her small features. Julian offered a warm, reassuring smile, stepping softly across the floor and lowering himself to sit cross-legged on the rug beside her.

Julian picked up a green crayon, asking if he could help color the leaves on the drawing of an oak tree. Lily nodded shyly, handing him the crayon without a word. For several minutes, the room was filled with the gentle, rhythmic scratching of wax on paper. Julian used the quiet moment to bridge the emotional chasm that had separated them for so long. He spoke softly, promising Lily that she was safe in this house, that no one would ever hurt her or raise a hand against her again. His voice carried the weight of a solemn, unshakable oath.

Lily stopped coloring, looking up into Julian’s eyes with an intensity that belied her five years of age. She reached out a small hand, her fingers gently touching the fabric of his suit sleeve, seeking physical confirmation of his words. Julian covered her small hand with his large one, giving it a reassuring squeeze. He realized that children absorb far more than adults give them credit for; Lily understood the shift in the household dynamics, sensing that her protector had finally arrived to stand between her and the storm.

Elena walked into the nursery carrying a small plate of sliced fruit and crackers, smiling softly at the sight of the father and daughter bonding on the floor. She set the tray on a low table, quietly retreating to give them space. Julian looked up at Elena as she turned to leave, sharing a silent nod of mutual understanding. The alliance between the master of the house and the maid was unspoken, forged in the fires of protective instinct. As Julian continued coloring with Lily, a renewed sense of purpose settled over him; he would dismantle Clara’s web of deceit piece by piece until the absolute truth was brought into the light.
