Chapter 6

The morning light cut through the sheer curtains of the master bedroom, illuminating the vast expanse of the king-sized bed where Clara lay awake, staring blankly at the ornate plaster molding on the ceiling. She had not slept a wink. The manila folder was still locked in Julian’s study, and the certainty she had maintained for years was rapidly unraveling. She slid out of bed, slipping into a tailored cashmere robe before walking over to the dressing table. Her reflection showed a woman whose perfection was beginning to crack at the edges, the stress etching fine lines around her eyes despite the expensive creams and rigorous skincare routines.
Downstairs in the kitchen, Elena was quietly preparing breakfast, her movements precise and measured. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and toasted brioche filled the air. Julian entered the kitchen a few moments later, dressed in a charcoal-gray suit, looking just as exhausted as his wife. He poured himself a cup of black coffee, leaning against the marble countertop. He looked directly at Elena, thanking her quietly for her loyalty yesterday. Elena offered a polite, restrained nod, acknowledging his gratitude without overstepping her boundaries as household staff.

Clara swept into the kitchen moments later, her expression hardened into an icy mask. She ignored Elena completely, fixing her gaze entirely on Julian. She demanded to know why Marcus had been visiting the house late last night, her voice tight with suppressed panic. Julian did not flinch. He set his coffee cup down, the ceramic clinking softly against the marble, and told Clara that they needed to have a serious conversation about transparency, trust, and the contents of the adoption file currently sitting in his study.
The atmosphere in the kitchen plummeted to freezing temperatures. Clara’s mask slipped for a fraction of a second, her micro-expressions revealing deep-seated fear mixed with bitter resentment. She spat out that Julian was ruining everything they had built, choosing an inconvenient child over the future they had meticulously planned. Julian remained entirely composed, his voice a steady, unrelenting force. He stated that a future built on lies and cruelty was no future at all. He turned and walked out of the kitchen, leaving Clara standing alone amid the scent of coffee, trapped by the closing walls of her own deception.
