Chapter 5

Elena moved quietly through the dimly lit corridors, carrying a silver tray with a pot of chamomile tea and a fresh cup toward the second-floor library. Her mind raced with the events of the afternoon. She knew she was walking a tightrope; working as a maid in an elite household meant seeing and hearing things meant for the shadows, but intervening physically had crossed a line that could easily cost her livelihood. Yet, looking at Lily’s tear-stained face earlier, she knew she would make the same choice again without a single moment of hesitation.

As Elena approached the library, the heavy oak door was slightly ajar, casting a warm sliver of light across the patterned Persian runner in the hallway. She heard the low murmur of voices within. Julian was speaking with Marcus, his longtime attorney and oldest friend, who had arrived quietly through the side entrance. Elena paused, balancing the tray against her hip, not intending to eavesdrop, but catching fragments of a conversation that made her breath catch in her throat. Marcus was advising Julian on the legal complexities of custody and guardianship, emphasizing that the situation regarding Lily was far more legally ambiguous than Julian had ever realized.

Julian’s voice rose slightly, tinged with a mixture of disbelief and profound sorrow. He stated that Clara had lied to him about the child's true heritage, concealing documents that proved Lily was not an anonymous orphan left on their doorstep, but someone tied directly to Julian's own family lineage. Elena’s eyes widened in shock behind the partially open door. The heavy silver tray shook slightly in her hands, the porcelain teacup rattling against its saucer. She quickly stepped back, retreating into the shadows of the hallway before anyone inside could notice her presence.

Returning downstairs to the quiet servants' quarters, Elena set the tray on her small wooden table and sank into the armchair. Her mind was a whirlwind of dangerous revelations. If Lily was truly part of Julian's bloodline, Clara’s deep-seated hatred and violent rejection of the child suddenly made chilling sense. It was not merely snobbery or coldness; it was a desperate, calculated effort to erase a living reminder of a past betrayal. Elena realized that she and little Lily were no longer just observers in a dysfunctional marriage; they were unwitting participants in a high-stakes war for inheritance, truth, and survival.
