Chapter 2

Julian knelt beside Elena and Lily, lowering himself without regard for the pristine fabric of his dark trousers. His expression softened noticeably as he reached out a cautious hand, gently brushing a stray curl away from Lily's tear-streaked cheek. Lily flinched slightly at first, conditioned by the harsh environment of the estate, but recognized the genuine concern in Julian’s eyes. She allowed him to touch her chin, lifting her face so he could see the raw distress etched into her features. The white stuffed bunny remained clutched tightly in her small fists, a fragile anchor to her sense of security.
Clara paced near the grand piano, her heels clicking a staccato rhythm of irritation. She crossed her arms tightly over her silk blouse, her voice dripping with calculated disdain. She argued that discipline was necessary, that the child had no business near an instrument worth more than most people earned in a decade. Clara reminded Julian of their social standing, of the upcoming charity gala, and of the absolute necessity of maintaining order in a household of their stature. To Clara, Lily was not a daughter in the emotional sense, but a disruptive variable in a carefully calculated social equation.

Julian stood up slowly, towering over Clara with a chilling stillness. He did not raise his voice; his controlled anger was far more terrifying than any outburst. He reminded Clara that the grand piano had belonged to his mother, a woman who believed music belonged to everyone, especially children. Clara’s eyes flashed with resentment at the mention of her late mother-in-law, a lingering ghost of disapproval that had haunted their marriage from the very beginning. Julian turned his attention back to Elena, instructing her to take Lily up to the nursery and prepare a warm bath. Elena nodded respectfully, lifting the little girl effortlessly into her arms.
As Elena carried Lily away down the long, winding hallway, the heavy silence returned to the parlor. Julian faced Clara squarely, demanding to know the true extent of the hostility she harbored toward the child. Clara attempted to deflect, laughing nervously and suggesting Julian was overly sensitive, exhausted from the pressures of the firm. Yet her micro-expressions betrayed her; her jaw twitched, and her eyes darted away from his intense gaze. Julian realized with sudden, sickening clarity that what he had witnessed today was not an isolated incident, but merely the tip of a much deeper, uglier iceberg of neglect and emotional abuse hidden behind closed doors.
