Chapter 3

Upstairs in the sun-drenched nursery, the warm bathwater cascaded into the porcelain tub, creating a soothing white noise that drowned out the tension downstairs. Elena sat on a small wooden stool beside the tub, carefully unlacing Lily’s sneakers and setting them aside. Lily sat quietly, her pink sweater pooled on the floor, clutching her white stuffed bunny with one hand while splashing the water gently with the other. The tiny ripples caught the afternoon light, casting dancing shadows across the pastel walls of the room. Elena spoke in a soft, melodic whisper, asking Lily about her favorite stories and distracting her from the lingering sadness.

Elena’s heart ached with a profound, quiet grief. She had worked in the household for two years, watching the growing chasm between Julian, Clara, and the silent little girl who seemed to exist entirely on the periphery of their lives. Clara had never officially adopted Lily, a legal detail that Julian had kept tightly guarded, though the exact origins of the child remained a closely 3 guarded secret within the estate. Elena wrapped a fluffy white towel around Lily’s shivering shoulders, lifting her out of the tub and helping her into soft cotton pajamas with little yellow ducks printed on the fabric.

As Elena brushed Lily’s damp curly brown hair, a soft knock echoed at the wooden door. Julian stepped into the nursery, his dark suit jacket removed, leaving him in his crisp black shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms. Lily’s eyes lit up slightly at his arrival, a subtle shift that did not go unnoticed by Elena. Julian walked over, kneeling beside the low chair. He pulled a small, leather-bound book of fairy tales from his pocket, offering it to Lily with a gentle smile. Lily took the book slowly, her thumb tracing the embossed gold lettering on the cover.

Elena stood up, quietly excusing herself to tidy the adjoining bathroom, giving father and daughter a rare moment of privacy. Julian sat on the edge of the child-sized bed as Lily climbed under the floral duvet. He began to read aloud, his deep, resonant voice filling the quiet room with tales of brave knights and enchanted forests. Lily listened intently, her heavy eyelids slowly drooping as exhaustion finally claimed her. Julian watched her fall asleep, a complex web of guilt, duty, and lingering questions tightening in his chest. He knew he could no longer turn a blind eye to the toxic dynamic festering downstairs.
