Chapter 6: The Gathering Storm

The morning sun broke through the grey cloud cover, casting long, sharp shadows across the glass canyons of the financial district. Inside her downtown apartment, Clara Vance stood before the floor-to-ceiling mirror, adjusting the lapel of a brand-new beige business suit—an exact replica of the one ruined during the falling glass incident. She refused to let intimidation dictate her wardrobe or her spirit. On the glass vanity table rested Marcus Thorne’s decrypted flash drive, its metallic casing catching the morning light like a small, dangerous blade.

Her private phone buzzed insistently. She checked the screen: a message from the internal security chief informing her that the executive board meeting had been moved up by two hours at the direct behest of Arthur Sterling. They were attempting to ambush her, pushing through the merger vote while she was supposedly recovering from the trauma of the accident. Sterling clearly believed she would be cowering in her penthouse, too shaken to mount a defense.

Clara grabbed the flash drive, slipped it into her briefcase, and strode out of her apartment toward the private elevator. Her mind was entirely focused, every emotion locked away behind a mask of cool executive professionalism. She knew the risks involved in walking back into the Nexus tower after what had happened just forty-eight hours ago. Sterling’s reach was vast, and his associates within the building security team were loyal to his paycheck, not to corporate ethics.

Halfway downtown, Leo was waiting for her at a designated rendezvous point near the side service entrance of the Nexus building. He was leaning against his electric delivery scooter, wearing his familiar blue jacket over a clean grey shirt. As Clara’s taxi pulled up to the curb, she rolled down the window and caught his eye.

Leo stepped over to the vehicle, leaning down to speak quietly through the glass. "Marcus got the files decrypted. I delivered the backup to him safely last night, but your phone calls are likely intercepted. They know you're coming."

Clara opened the car door and stepped out onto the sidewalk, looking directly into Leo’s calm, resolute eyes. "Good. Let them think they have the advantage," she said, her voice steady and resolute. "Are you ready to finish what we started?"

Leo gave a quiet nod, adjusting the strap of his delivery bag. "I'll secure the perimeter service elevators. If anyone tries to cut off your digital access from the server room, I'll make sure they don't reach the boardroom."

Without another word, Clara turned and marched toward the towering glass entrance of Nexus Financial, her head held high. The automatic doors slid open with a soft hiss, welcoming her back into the lion's den. Leo watched her disappear into the bustling lobby before turning his scooter toward the underground delivery bay, knowing the real battle was about to begin behind closed doors.
