Chapter 3: An Unlikely Alliance

The rain began to fall in a steady, rhythmic drizzle by the time Leo’s phone finally rang the next morning. He was cleaning the grease off his scooter’s handlebars when he glanced down at the screen and recognized the private number Clara had used the night before. Wiping his hands quickly on a rag, he answered on the second ring, his heart beating slightly faster than usual.

"Leo? It's Clara Vance," the voice on the other end said, clear and direct. "I hope I'm not interrupting your morning route."

"Not at all, Ms. Vance," Leo replied, stepping away from the noisy street traffic into the quiet shelter of an alleyway. "How are you holding up after yesterday?"

"I'm surviving," Clara answered, a faint hint of a smile touching her words. "Actually, that's why I'm calling. I need a favor, Leo. And I'm willing to compensate you generously for your time. Can we meet for coffee at a quiet place away from the financial district?"

An hour later, sitting in a dimly lit corner booth of an out-of-the-way neighborhood café, Leo listened in stunned disbelief as Clara explained the reality behind the shattered window. She laid out fragments of corporate espionage, embezzlement, and a hostile takeover scheme that threatened to wipe out the retirement funds of thousands of everyday workers. She did not share every intricate detail, but she made the stakes unmistakably clear: the people orchestrating this fraud were dangerous, and they viewed her as the primary obstacle standing in their way.

"Why me?" Leo asked quietly, stirring his black coffee without drinking it. "You have lawyers, security consultants, the police. I deliver packages for a living."

"Because everyone in my building wears an expensive suit and has an agenda," Clara replied earnestly, leaning forward across the small table. "They can be bought, coerced, or intimidated. You showed me yesterday that your instincts are pure. You saw danger and you acted to save a human life without calculating the personal cost. I need someone I can trust to help me move sensitive documents between secure locations without triggering the digital surveillance systems of my corporate rivals."

Leo stared into her dark, serious eyes. He knew instinctively that agreeing to help her would thrust him into a world far more perilous than dodging reckless drivers on his delivery scooter. Yet, looking at the quiet courage in her posture, he felt a profound sense of responsibility settle over his shoulders. He had saved her life once; walking away now would mean abandoning her to the wolves who had tried to crush her.

"What do you need me to do first?" Leo asked, sealing the unspoken pact between them.
