Chapter 5: Unmasking the Shadow

Leo arrived at the weathered wooden cottage on the northern edge of town twenty minutes later. The house was surrounded by towering pine trees that dripped with moisture in the chilly air. An elderly man with sharp gray eyes and a heavy woolen sweater opened the front door before Leo even had a chance to knock.
"You're Clara's courier," the old man said, his voice deep and raspy. "Come inside before the wind picks up."
Inside, the living room smelled of old paper, pipe tobacco, and floor wax. Computer monitors glowed softly on a large oak desk in the corner, displaying complex lines of financial code and corporate asset structures. Leo unzipped his backpack, retrieved the encrypted flash drive, and handed it over to the accountant, whose name was Marcus Thorne.
Marcus plugged the drive into a dedicated terminal that was completely isolated from the internet. As lines of data began to decode on the screen, Marcus adjusted his spectacles and let out a low whistle. "Good lord," he murmured, scrolling through rows of offshore shell companies and hidden asset transfers. "They aren't just skimming profits. They're systematically liquidating the entire pension fund and funneling the capital into a private holding entity controlled by Arthur Sterling."
Leo frowned at the name. "Arthur Sterling? Isn't he the managing director of Nexus Financial?"
"The very same," Marcus replied grimly, tapping a key to save a backup archive. "He’s Clara’s direct superior and the mastermind behind the hostile takeover. If this goes through tomorrow morning, thousands of innocent people lose everything, and Sterling walks away with billions. Clara knew too much, which is why they tried to remove her permanently."
Marcus looked up from the screen, studying Leo with a newfound level of respect. "You understand that by bringing this here, you've put a target on your own back, son?"
"Someone tried to kill her," Leo said simply, his voice steady. "Standing by and doing nothing isn't an option."

Marcus nodded slowly, handing the flash drive back to Leo. "Take this back to Clara. Tell her I’ve decrypted the ownership trail of the offshore accounts. It’s the smoking gun she needs for the board meeting tomorrow. But she has to present it personally, and she has to do it before the market opens at nine o'clock."
Leo pocketed the drive, secured his helmet, and prepared to head back into the city. The storm outside seemed to intensify, matching the gathering tempest within the corporate towers downtown. The endgame had arrived, and the margins for error had narrowed to zero.
