Chapter 1: The Echo of Falling Glass

The reverberation of the shattered glass lingered in the crisp morning air outside the obsidian tower of the Nexus Financial Corporation. For Leo, the world had momentarily slowed down to a fraction of its normal speed. He still felt the residual adrenaline pumping through his veins from the frantic leap that had saved a complete stranger's life. His blue delivery jacket, usually dusty from hours of navigating the congested city streets on his electric scooter, was now smudged with white concrete powder and dirt from the pavement.
A few feet away, Clara stood up slowly with the gentle assistance of a building security guard. Her immaculate beige business suit was ruined, stained with soot and small shards of tempered glass, yet her poise remained remarkably intact. Her long dark hair, which had been neatly tied back, cascaded loosely over her shoulders as she turned away from the guard’s restraining grip. Her eyes searched urgently through the milling crowd of panicked pedestrians and shouting onlookers until they locked onto Leo.
"Thank you... You saved me," Clara said, her voice carrying a quiet intensity that cut through the surrounding chaos.
Leo offered a modest, almost bashful nod, dusting off his knees. He mumbled a polite response, assuring her he was fine, just as the wail of approaching sirens began to echo down the avenue. Emergency vehicles were converging rapidly on the plaza, their flashing red and blue lights painting the modern glass facade in erratic strokes.
Clara did not immediately walk away toward the safety of the interior lobby as her colleagues urged her to do. Instead, she took a deliberate step back toward the young delivery boy. She noticed the slight tremor in his hands—a delayed reaction to the sheer danger he had plunged into without a second thought. Without speaking, she reached into her tailored leather handbag, pulled out a sleek, minimalist business card embossed with silver lettering, and pressed it firmly into his palm.

"My name is Clara Vance," she said softly, her gaze holding his with unwavering clarity. "Please call me later today. I want to make sure you are properly thanked for what you did."
Before Leo could formulate a reply, building executives and frantic PR managers swarmed around Clara, shielding her from the press and guiding her toward a secure side entrance. Leo stood alone on the edge of the cordoned-off sidewalk, staring down at the heavy card in his hand. The glittering skyscrapers of the financial district suddenly felt much heavier, casting long shadows over the bustling city. The twelve seconds that had just passed had irrevocably altered the trajectory of both their lives, setting into motion a chain of events neither of them could possibly anticipate.
