Chapter 2: Beneath the Surface

Later that evening, the neon lights of the city hummed against the darkening sky as Leo parked his scooter outside his modest apartment building in a working-class neighborhood. The physical exhaustion of a twelve-hour delivery shift finally caught up with his muscles, but his mind remained entirely consumed by the events of the morning. He pulled Clara Vance’s business card from the pocket of his grey shirt and set it carefully on his cluttered wooden desk. The embossed silver letters caught the amber glow of his desk lamp, reading Vice President of Corporate Acquisitions. It was a title from a world that felt entirely alien to his own daily struggles of rent payments and fuel costs.

Leo lived in a cramped, orderly studio apartment filled with old books, spare scooter parts, and framed photographs of his younger sister, Maya, who was currently studying nursing across the state. He picked up his battered smartphone, staring at the sequence of digits printed beneath Clara’s name. A lingering sense of hesitation kept his thumb hovering over the screen. He was just a delivery boy; she was a high-powered executive. Crossing that invisible social divide felt presumptuous, yet her parting words had carried a sincerity that refused to be dismissed as mere politeness.

Meanwhile, miles away in a sprawling penthouse overlooking the illuminated harbor, Clara Vance sat in absolute silence. A glass of cold water sat untouched on the marble coffee table before her. She was replaying the shattering of the window in her mind, not with the terror of a victim, but with the analytical precision of a seasoned strategist. That window on the twentieth floor had not broken by accident. The building maintenance logs she had secretly reviewed on her tablet indicated that the anchoring bolts had been deliberately sheared. Someone had wanted her dead, or at the very least, severely injured before tomorrow's crucial merger vote.

Her phone vibrated gently against the marble surface, displaying an unknown local number. Without hesitation, Clara swiped the screen and brought the device to her ear.

"I know you're there," Clara said into the receiver, her voice devoid of fear and steeped in cold determination.

"You were lucky today, Ms. Vance," a distorted voice whispered from the other end before the line went dead with a sharp click.

Clara stared at the blank screen for a long moment. She realized immediately that her security detail within Nexus Financial could not be trusted. The corporate snakes slithering through her department were willing to resort to lethal measures to bury the financial irregularities she had uncovered. She needed an ally who was entirely outside the corporate ecosystem—someone invisible, observant, and fundamentally decent. Her thoughts drifted back to the young delivery boy who had risked his life to push her out of harm's way without a single second of hesitation.
