Chapter 9 - The Geneva Connection

The ringing of the satellite phone cut through the quiet dining room like a siren. The man holding it was one of Special Agent Vance's tactical officers, his face grim as he extended the heavy device toward his superior. Agent Vance stepped away from the mahogany table, her heels clicking sharply against the floorboards as she took the phone and pressed it firmly against her ear.

"Vance here," she said sharply, listening intently as a raspy, hurried voice crackled through the secure line from across the Atlantic.

Caroline did not move from her spot at the head of the table. Her dark red dress seemed to absorb the amber light of the chandelier, framing her rigid posture and unreadable expression. Margaret slowly rocked the baby, her eyes darting nervously between the federal agent and the two younger women. Elena stood frozen near the foyer, her hands shoved deep into the pockets of her gray coat as she waited for the final shoe to drop.

Agent Vance listened for nearly a full minute, her expression darkening with every passing second. Finally, she lowered the phone, her thumb pressing the disconnect button with a heavy, deliberate click. She turned back to face the table, her eyes locking directly onto Caroline.

"Your father's jet was forced to make an emergency diversion back into airspace over the Atlantic," Agent Vance announced, her voice carrying a chilling gravity. "The Swiss authorities refused to grant landing rights because the destination hangar in Geneva was flagged under an international terrorism and asset-laundering alert."

Caroline let out a slow, controlled breath, her mind racing to calculate the fallout. "So his escape failed. He's coming back here?"

"Worse," Agent Vance replied, stepping closer to the table and laying a freshly printed flight manifest down beside the medical bills. "The jet didn't turn around because of Swiss authorities. It turned around because someone on board remotely disabled the primary navigation and fuel injection systems thirty thousand feet above the ocean."

Elena gasped, stepping forward out of the shadows of the foyer. "Remotely disabled? Who could do that?"

Agent Vance looked pointedly at the open manila folder resting right in front of Caroline, specifically at the corporate seal stamped in the corner—the exact seal belonging to Sinclair Enterprises' primary cybersecurity subsidiary, a division that Julian had quietly signed over to an anonymous holding company just three days before their wedding anniversary.

"Julian didn't just manage the company's front-end accounts," Agent Vance stated clearly. "He built a backdoor kill switch into every single asset your family owned, Caroline. Your husband wasn't just a pawn—he was holding the detonator the entire time."

Margaret stopped rocking the baby, her face turning pale as white bedsheets. "My son... my son created a weapon that could bring down both families in a single keystroke?"

"And right now," Agent Vance added, glancing at her watch, "that kill switch is counting down its final twenty-four hours."

Caroline stared at the corporate seal on the document, her heart hammering against her ribs. She reached out, her fingers tracing the embossed logo with cold precision. She realized then that arresting Julian had solved nothing; the real danger wasn't locked away in a police precinct downtown—it was encoded in the very digital infrastructure of their lives, and the countdown had already begun.

Before anyone could speak, the power throughout the entire estate flickered violently, plunging the grand dining room into total, pitch-black darkness, save for the eerie blue glow of Elena's phone screen lighting up the center of the table.
