Chapter 7 - The Federal Audit

The sudden crash of the front door swung wide open, cutting off Elena's reading mid-sentence. Margaret screamed softly, instinctively pulling the baby's head down against her chest to shield the infant from the sudden commotion. Three men in tactical gear bearing federal insignia strode into the grand foyer, their boots ringing sharply against the marble floor. At their center stood a severe-looking woman in a navy pantsuit, holding a leather folder bearing the golden seal of the Department of Justice.
"Caroline Sinclair?" the woman asked, stepping into the dining room without invitation, her eyes scanning the table, the half-eaten food, and the scattered documents. "I am Special Agent Vance. We have a federal injunction freezing all corporate and personal assets associated with the Sinclair estate."
Caroline did not flinch. She stood tall at the head of the table, her dark red dress catching the amber light as she adjusted her posture with absolute composure. She slid the forged trust document back into the manila folder, closing it with a deliberate thud.
"You're a bit late, Agent Vance," Caroline replied, her voice steady and chillingly calm. "The local police already hauled my husband off twenty minutes ago. You'll find him enjoying the hospitality of the precinct downtown."
Special Agent Vance stepped closer, her sharp eyes flicking from Caroline to Elena, and finally lingering on Margaret holding the infant at the other end of the table. She pulled a pair of reading glasses from her breast pocket, sliding them onto her nose as she surveyed the incriminating paperwork spread across the polished mahogany.
"Mr. Sinclair's arrest was merely for local embezzlement," Agent Vance said, pulling a dense stack of stapled papers from her own briefcase and laying them squarely on top of Elena's folder. "What we have uncovered spans three continents, offshore shell companies, and fraudulent federal grants totaling over twelve million dollars."
Elena stepped back, her hands flying to her mouth as the color drained completely from her face. "Twelve million? No... Julian said he was just investing in real estate and tech startups. He told me the baby's trust fund was legitimate!"
Margaret looked up from the baby, her eyes burning with a fierce, motherly anger that had finally overtaken her grief. "My son was a weak, lying coward, but twelve million dollars? Julian never had the business acumen to pull off an international scheme of that scale by himself. Someone else was pulling the strings."
Agent Vance turned her sharp gaze toward Margaret, raising an eyebrow slightly. "You are entirely correct, Mrs. Sinclair. Mr. Sinclair was merely the front man—the signature on the paper. The federal investigation indicates that the primary beneficiary of these offshore accounts is an entity registered under a completely different name."
Caroline's expression shifted, the cold triumph vanishing from her face, replaced by a sudden, creeping realization that made her heart pound against her ribs. She looked down at the manila folder she had clutched so tightly all evening, remembering the very first document Julian had nervously slid across the table before everything unraveled.
"Read the fine print on the hospital bill from the first folder, Caroline," Elena whispered urgently, her eyes wide with sudden panic. "Look at the billing address for the maternity ward."

Caroline's fingers trembled ever so slightly as she opened the folder for the third time, pulling out the medical bill with the baby photo and numbers, and turned it over to examine the official stamp on the reverse side.
