Chapter 12 - The Self-Destruct Countdown

The shrill, rhythmic beeping of the satellite terminal filled the dark dining room like a ticking time bomb. The red warning banner cast a harsh, crimson glow across the faces of the four women standing around the mahogany table. Margaret clutched the baby tightly, her chest heaving with silent panic as she watched the digital numbers on the terminal screen drop rapidly: 00:14:59... 00:14:58...
"Agent Vance, override it!" Elena shouted, pointing frantically at the device in the federal officer's hands. "You're federal law enforcement! You must have a master cryptographic key!"
Agent Vance’s fingers flew across the terminal's compact mechanical keyboard, her face etched with intense concentration. Beads of sweat formed along her hairline as she punched in a rapid sequence of commands, only for the screen to flash a harsh, glaring error message: ACCESS DENIED. BIOMETRIC MISMATCH.
"I can't," Agent Vance said, her voice tight and strained. "The system requires a live retinal scan from the primary trust holder to authorize an emergency system purge. Without it, the entire financial network—including every corporate account, property deed, and trust fund associated with both families—will be permanently wiped from the global ledger in less than fifteen minutes."
Caroline stared at the phone screen where Julian's face still smiled calmly from the precinct holding cell. The sheer audacity of his trap was breathtaking. He hadn't just embezzled funds; he had engineered a digital doomsday device that guaranteed if he went down, he would take every vestige of their wealth, status, and security down with him into total oblivion.
"Julian," Caroline spoke into the phone, her voice terrifyingly calm, cutting through the beeping of the countdown timer. "You realize that if everything is wiped, your child's medical trust and Elena's future disappear with it. You're destroying your own family just to spite mine."
On the screen, Julian’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, a micro-expression of doubt flickering across his eyes before he quickly masked it with a cold shrug.
"There is no future for me here, Caroline," Julian replied smoothly, leaning closer to the camera lens in his cell. "If I'm going away for twenty years, I'm leaving behind a clean slate. No winners. Just ashes."
Margaret let out a sharp sob, tears finally spilling over her cheeks as she looked down at her grandchild. "Julian, look at what you've become! Have you completely lost your soul?"
Julian didn't answer his mother. Instead, he raised his cuffed hands toward the precinct camera and tapped the screen twice—a pre-arranged signal that triggered the final, irreversible phase of the countdown.
On the table, the terminal's timer shifted color from red to a blinding, solid white, and the countdown dropped precipitously: 00:05:00... 00:04:59...

Caroline didn't hesitate. She snatched the satellite terminal from Agent Vance's hands, dropped her own face directly in front of the built-in optical scanner, and whispered a single command into the device's microphone that triggered an unrecorded emergency override protocol her father had hidden deep within the system's source code.
