Chapter 11 - The Precinct Feed

The sudden flash of crimson light from Elena's phone screen painted the entire dining room in an ominous, blood-red hue. Margaret winced, shielding the baby's eyes from the harsh glare as the device began to ring with a jarring, mechanical tone. Special Agent Vance stepped forward quickly, snatched the phone from the mahogany table, and swiped her thumb across the screen to accept the encrypted video feed before the encryption protocol could time out.
A live, high-definition video window popped open on the display. The harsh fluorescent lighting of a windowless holding cell at the local police precinct filled the screen. Sitting at a small metal table in the center of the cell was Julian. His black tuxedo jacket was gone, his white dress shirt wrinkled and untucked, and his tie discarded entirely on the floor. But the panic and shock from earlier in the evening were entirely gone from his face; in their place was a cold, unsettling calmness that sent a chill down the spine of everyone in the dining room.
"Julian," Elena breathed out, stepping closer to the federal agent's outstretched hand as she stared at the screen in disbelief.
Julian looked directly into the camera lens, knowing full well that Caroline, Margaret, and the federal agents were watching every micro-expression. He didn't look like a defeated criminal facing federal indictments; he looked like a man who held all the remaining cards.
"Hello, everyone," Julian said, his voice smooth, clear, and completely devoid of the stammering nervousness he had displayed just an hour earlier. "I hope the power outage isn't too inconvenient. The estate's backup generator was always a bit temperamental."
Caroline stepped into the harsh beam of Agent Vance's flashlight, her dark red dress catching the white light as she leaned down to stare directly at the small phone screen.
"Cut the act, Julian," Caroline said, her voice dripping with venomous control. "You're sitting in a holding cell with federal marshals outside your door. You have zero leverage."
Julian let out a slow, quiet chuckle, leaning back against the metal chair in his cell. "Do I, Caroline? Check your phone. The one resting right next to the fruit bowl."
Caroline’s eyes darted across the table. Half-hidden beneath a silver napkin ring lay her own personal smartphone, its screen dark until a split second later when it buzzed violently against the wood, lighting up with a single incoming message from an unknown number. Caroline reached out with steady fingers, picked up the device, and tapped the notification.
A high-resolution digital copy of the original marriage certificate flashed on her screen, accompanied by a timestamp from twenty minutes ago—showing that the document had just been legally altered to transfer all of Caroline's personal inheritance directly to Julian's incarcerated account.
"You signed it away digitally when you opened the first manila folder," Julian smiled softly through the video feed. "The moment the folder touched the table, your biometric signature was cloned from the smart-glass surface. Checkmate, Caroline."

Before Caroline could look up to respond, the secure satellite terminal in Agent Vance's hands began to beep frantically, displaying a red warning banner that read: PRIMARY ASSET TRANSFER COMPLETE. SELF-DESTRUCT PROTOCOL INITIATED.
