Chapter 10 - The Digital Blackout

The sudden, violent flicker of the estate's electrical grid plunged the grand dining room into an absolute, suffocating darkness. Margaret let out a startled gasp, tightening her grip on the infant, who began to cry in earnest, startled by the abrupt shift in atmosphere. The amber warmth of the wall sconces vanished instantly, leaving only the harsh, unnatural blue light emanating from Elena's phone resting on the mahogany table. The device's screen flickered rapidly, casting long, dancing shadows across the faces of the four women trapped in the room.

"Stay calm," Special Agent Vance commanded, her voice cutting through the darkness with military precision as the sound of her tactical gear rustled against her uniform. "This isn't a normal power outage. The entire circuit has been systematically isolated from the municipal grid."

Caroline didn't panic. Years of navigating her family's corporate maneuvering had taught her that panic was a luxury reserved for the unprepared. She kept her hands flat on the polished wood, her fingers tracing the edge of the open manila folder by touch alone.

"It's the kill switch," Caroline said, her voice eerily calm in the pitch black. "The twenty-four-hour countdown has been initiated from an off-site terminal."

Elena reached down and grabbed her phone, holding it up like a makeshift flashlight to illuminate the immediate area. The harsh blue beam washed over the scattered hospital bills, court filings, and financial ledgers, making the black-and-white text look stark and clinical.

"How do we stop it?" Elena asked, her voice trembling slightly as she looked from Agent Vance to Caroline. "If the power is out, we can't access the secondary servers or authorize the override codes."

Agent Vance flicked open a heavy-duty tactical flashlight attached to her belt, casting a bright, focused beam of white light across the ceiling, illuminating the ornate crown molding and the massive crystal chandelier above them.

"We don't need the local servers," Agent Vance replied, pulling a secure satellite terminal from her briefcase. "The federal mainframe has a mirrored copy of the Sinclair database, but we need a physical biometric authorization key to bypass the final firewall—a retinal scan and voice print belonging to a direct blood relative of the primary trust holder."

Margaret looked down at the crying baby in her arms, then slowly raised her weary eyes to meet Caroline's intense gaze. The implication hung in the air, heavy and inescapable.

"Caroline," Margaret whispered, her voice breaking with sorrow and exhaustion. "The trust was established using your grandmother's lineage, but the master override... that requires your father's direct bloodline. Or yours."

Caroline stared at the federal agent, her mind calculating the staggering implications. To stop the digital blackout and prevent the total liquidation of both families' fortunes, she had to step directly into the trap her father and her husband had built, using her own identity as the key to unlock a system designed to destroy them all.

"Give me the terminal, Agent Vance," Caroline said firmly, stepping away from the head of the table into the harsh white beam of the flashlight.

Before the federal agent could hand over the device, the phone screen on the table suddenly flashed bright red, displaying a new incoming video feed from an encrypted, unknown IP address originating from a private terminal located inside the local police precinct downtown.
