Chapter 9

Down in the ballroom, Rafael Vance cleared his throat, adjusting his lapel with theatrical grace. The spotlights converged on him, casting a brilliant white halo over his smug, confident face. He raised his glass slightly, scanning the crowd with a triumphant smile that reached all the way to his cold eyes.

“Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed colleagues, and dear friends,” Rafael began, his voice rich and resonant, carrying effortlessly through the state-of-the-art sound system. “Thank you for joining us tonight to celebrate a new era for the Vance Corporation. As many of you know, my family has guided this enterprise through decades of prosperity and resilience. Tonight, I am proud to announce the final consolidation of all subsidiary holdings under my sole leadership, ensuring absolute stability and vision for the future.”

A polite wave of applause rippled through the audience. In the front row, Elena Vance sat with perfect poise, her fingers loosely wrapped around the stem of a crystal champagne glass. Her face was an impenetrable mask of calm, though her eyes were locked onto her stepson with predatory focus.

Rafael paused, savoring the applause before continuing. “Some whispered that our dynasty was fractured by past tragedies—that the unresolved ghosts of our history would somehow impede our progress. But history is written by those who survive, by those who take decisive action when others hesitate.”

From her vantage point on the upper mezzanine, Clara gripped the iron railing so tightly her knuckles turned white. She recognized the chilling subtext of Rafael’s words. He was openly celebrating his victory, basking in the impunity of a crime he believed he had successfully buried forever.

“Tonight,” Rafael continued, raising his voice slightly as he prepared to deliver his final stroke, “we close the books on the past. The last remaining legal obstacles have been cleared, and—”

Before Rafael could finish his sentence, a sharp, piercing sound cut through the silence of the ballroom.

Clink. Crash.

Elena Vance had intentionally released her grip on her crystal champagne glass, letting it shatter loudly against the marble floor at her feet. The amber liquid splashed across her evening shoes, drawing the startled attention of everyone seated near the front. Absolute silence descended upon the grand ballroom. Every head snapped toward Elena.

Rafael frowned from the stage, his smooth facade cracking for a fraction of a second. “Mother? Is something the matter?”

Elena slowly stood up from her chair, her emerald-green gown shimmering under the spotlights. She did not look down at the broken glass. Instead, she raised her chin, looked straight up at the upper mezzanine, and gave a slow, deliberate nod.
