Chapter 7

The days leading up to the annual Vance Corporation gala passed in a blur of agonizing tension. Clara continued her duties as a maid, scrubbing floors and serving tea under the watchful, paranoid eyes of Rafael Vance, who seemed to hover around the east wing with increasing frequency. Every interaction was a high-stakes psychological game. Clara had to master the art of keeping her eyes lowered, her movements submissive, and her pulse steady while carrying a quarter-million-dollar heirloom hidden beneath her utilitarian grey uniform.
In the shadows, Elena and Clara met in brief, whispered intervals behind the service pantries and in the servants' quarters during off-hours. Elena smuggled documents out of Rafael’s private study, piecing together a massive paper trail of embezzled funds, forged land titles, and fraudulent adoption suppression orders. Rafael had systematically looted the Vance accounts over the past decade, preparing to liquidate the entire estate and flee to an offshore tax haven after the upcoming gala.
“He’s planning to sell the primary holdings next Monday,” Elena whispered urgently as she handed Clara a fresh set of ledger photocopies behind the grand staircase. “Once the corporate assets are liquidated, we will have no legal standing to reclaim the estate, even if we prove your identity. We have to strike during the gala on Saturday night.”
“How?” Clara asked, clutching the papers to her chest. “How can two people—a disgraced maid and an aging stepmother—defeat a man who controls the board, the security, and the local authorities?”
“By using his own arrogance against him,” Elena replied, her eyes flashing with a cold, brilliant light. “Rafael loves an audience. He intends to use the gala to announce his absolute, unchallenged acquisition of the entire Vance empire. He will have every major investor, politician, and journalist in the state gathered in the grand ballroom. That is when we reveal the truth.”
Clara swallowed hard, feeling the immense weight of the impending confrontation. “And the bracelet?”
“It will be the centerpiece of the revelation,” Elena said firmly. “When the time is right, you will step into the light, remove your sleeve, and show the world the exact proof he tried to erase twenty-five years ago. But until then, you must play your part to absolute perfection.”
As if summoned by their mention of his name, a sharp cough echoed from the top of the grand staircase. Both women froze. Rafael stood on the landing, looking down at them with a dark, suspicious scowl. His sharp eyes scanned the distance between them, noting the way Elena’s hand hovered near Clara’s shoulder.
“Is there a staff meeting happening on the grand staircase?” Rafael called out, his voice echoing menacingly through the marble foyer.

Elena didn’t flinch. She gracefully straightened her posture, looking up at her stepson with disdain. “I was merely instructing the girl on the proper arrangement of the silver service for Saturday night, Rafael. Or do you now wish to micro-manage the cutlery as well as the boardrooms?”
Rafael grunted, turning away without another word, but the lingering look of suspicion in his eyes promised that the danger was mounting exponentially.
