Chapter 8

Saturday evening arrived with the oppressive heat of a late summer storm pressing down against the glass facade of the Vance estate. Floodlights illuminated the sprawling front lawns, guiding a continuous stream of luxury sedans and limousines up the winding driveway. Inside, the grand ballroom was a breathtaking spectacle of crystal chandeliers, cascading floral arrangements, and glittering evening gowns. High-society elites, corporate executives, and local politicians mingled over champagne and caviar, completely unaware of the explosive drama building beneath the glittering surface.
Upstairs in the second-floor service corridor, Clara stood before a small mirror in the maids' changing room, adjusting the collar of her grey uniform one last time. Tonight, she wore a modified version of the uniform—pressed to perfection, but underneath the left sleeve, the heavy gold bracelet pressed coolly against her skin. Her reflection showed a woman transformed; the fear that had defined her eyes in previous days had crystallized into a fierce, unwavering resolve.
Elena entered the room silently, wearing an emerald-green velvet evening gown that commanded immediate respect, her sophisticated updo secured with diamond-encrusted pins. She walked over to Clara and placed her hands gently on the young woman’s shoulders, looking into her eyes with deep pride.
“Are you ready, my daughter?” Elena asked softly, using the term for the very first time.
Clara felt a lump form in her throat, but she nodded firmly. “I am ready. For my parents, and for us.”
“Good,” Elena said, handing her a master key card. “Take the service elevator to the mezzanine overlooking the ballroom. Stay out of sight until the stroke of nine. That is when Rafael will take the podium to make his grand announcement. When I give the signal—dropping my champagne glass on the floor—you walk out onto the upper balcony, step into the light, and pull back your sleeve.”

Clara took the key card, her fingers brushing Elena’s cool skin. She slipped out of the changing room and melted into the labyrinthine service corridors of the estate, moving with silent, practiced steps toward the mezzanine. Below her, the muffled strains of a string quartet drifted up through the floorboards, mixing with the low, steady murmur of hundreds of wealthy guests.
At precisely eight-fifty-five, Rafael Vance stepped up to the mahogany podium set up on the main stage of the ballroom. He looked magnificent in his bespoke tuxedo, smiling warmly as he tapped the microphone. The room quieted instantly, every eye turning toward the man holding the reins of the Vance empire. Clara reached the mezzanine railing, peering down through the wrought-iron scrollwork at the sea of faces below. Her heart hammered like a war drum, but she kept her breathing slow and measured, exactly as she had practiced.
