Chapter 10

The collective gaze of three hundred high-society guests shifted from Elena Vance up toward the grand mezzanine overlooking the ballroom. Standing alone behind the wrought-iron railing, bathed in the sharp beam of a spotlight that Elena had discreetly redirected via the remote lighting console, was Clara.

She wore her grey maid uniform, stark and unpretentious against the glittering backdrop of evening gowns and tuxedos. For a second, a wave of confused murmurs rippled through the crowd. Wealthy investors and politicians whispered to one another, wondering why a domestic worker was standing in the VIP gallery during the CEO’s keynote address.

Rafael’s face drained of color. On stage, his polished composure fractured completely. He stared up at the mezzanine, his eyes widening in sudden, paralyzing horror as his brain processed the silhouette, the bone structure, and most terrifyingly, the unmistakable carriage of the young woman standing above him.

Clara took a slow, deliberate breath. She did not cower. She stepped forward until her toes touched the edge of the iron scrollwork. With her right hand, she reached down to her left wrist, gripping the fabric of her grey sleeve.

With one sharp, decisive motion, Clara pulled the fabric back.

The heavy gold bracelet slid into full view under the brilliant glare of the spotlight. The dark oval stone caught the light, and the halo of diamonds flashed like a cluster of angry stars, visible to every single person in the grand ballroom.

A collective gasp echoed through the room. Several older board members, men who had served under Clara’s grandfather decades ago, surged to their feet, their eyes locked onto the piece of jewelry with absolute, stunned disbelief. Those antique bracelets had not been seen in public since the tragic night the infant heir vanished twenty-five years ago.

“What is the meaning of this?” Rafael shouted into the microphone, his voice cracking slightly before he caught himself. He slammed his hand onto the podium, glaring up at the gallery with undisguised fury. “Security! Remove that trespassing servant immediately! She is mentally unstable and has stolen Vance family property!”

“She has stolen nothing, Rafael,” Elena’s voice rang out, clear, resonant, and amplified by her proximity to a fallen table microphone. She turned to face the entire assembly, her eyes blazing with righteous indignation. “That bracelet belongs by birthright to the woman standing on the balcony. She is Clara Vance—the true, legitimate heir to this estate, whom you tried to murder and dispose of twenty-five years ago.”
