Chapter 8

The green progress bar on the central monitor ticked steadily toward ninety-eight percent. Clara’s eyes darted from the screen to the emergency power cutoff switch mounted on the wall beside the heavy server racks. The red plastic safety cover was intact, but the manual lever underneath could sever the primary data trunk in a fraction of a second.

"Julian, the uplink," Clara whispered urgently, shifting her weight without taking her eyes off Marcus.

Julian didn't hesitate. With explosive speed, he lunged across the smooth concrete floor toward the central console, his arm outstretched to intercept the satellite terminal before the final data packets could clear the local server cache.

Marcus reacted with equal swiftness, sidestepping Julian’s rush and sweeping his leg out in a calculated defensive maneuver that sent Julian stumbling against the edge of a server cabinet. The metal housing rattled violently under the impact, scattering loose cables across the floor.

Before Marcus could press the final confirmation key on the console, Walter vaulted past Julian, tackling the younger man around the waist and driving him hard against the opposing row of server racks. The heavy equipment groaned under the weight, warning lights flickering from green to angry amber as internal diagnostic sensors tripped.

"Get the switch!" Walter strained, holding Marcus pinned against the vibrating metal housing with desperate strength despite the age difference between them.

Clara ignored the searing pain in her bruised arm and threw her entire body weight against the red emergency cutoff lever on the wall. With a sharp, metallic snap, the internal circuit breakers tripped simultaneously across the entire subterranean level.

The sudden silence was absolute. The glowing green server banks flickered and died, plunging the room into total darkness save for the dim, battery-powered emergency strip lighting along the floor. The satellite uplink terminal slipped from Marcus’s hand, clattering uselessly against the concrete floor with its data stream frozen at ninety-nine percent completion.
