Chapter 2

The heavy oak front doors shuddered as Walter threw the secondary iron bolt into place, sealing the Vance estate off from the howling storm outside. Rain lashed against the tall arched windows, casting distorted shadows across the marble floor where Clara still lay. Julian walked toward the foyer entrance, his hard-soled shoes clicking rhythmically against the stone, signaling to Walter that the immediate area was contained.

Walter descended the staircase with measured steps, his silver-rimmed glasses catching the chandelier light. At fifty-five, he had served the Vance family through two generations of corporate restructuring and quiet scandals. He looked down at Clara with a mixture of professional detachment and genuine concern.

"The gates are locked, and the security feeds are routed to my private terminal," Walter reported, stopping a few feet from the spilled tray. "No vehicles are parked along the private drive. If anyone followed her here, they are currently on foot in the gardens."

Julian nodded, pulling out his phone to check the encrypted network status. The screen remained stubbornly black, a clear indication that a local signal jammer was active within a five-hundred-foot radius. "We are cut off. Someone didn't just want Clara stopped; they wanted this entire estate isolated before the contents of that tray could be analyzed."

Clara propped herself up on her elbows, ignoring the sharp pain radiating from her bruised ribs. "It’s not just oil on the floor, Walter. It’s the carrier fluid used in the subcutaneous delivery system for the trial subjects. Someone drained the entire batch from the central pharmacy storage and replaced it with a saline-mineral compound. If those patients receive their morning injections, the results will be fatal within hours."

Walter’s expression hardened. He knelt beside Clara, ignoring the ruined cuffs of his trousers as they touched the oily floor. He had overseen the allocation of the Vance Foundation grants for the neurology wing; he knew every administrator and head nurse by name.

"Who had access to the cold-storage vault besides you and Dr. Henderson?" Walter asked, his voice entirely devoid of warmth.

"Henderson was killed in his office at eleven o’clock," Clara answered flatly. "They made it look like an aneurysm, but I saw the puncture mark behind his ear. It was the same paralytic agent used in our neuro-regeneration tests. Someone inside our own research division is weaponizing our discoveries."
