Chapter 6

The air inside the utility tunnel was thick with the metallic scent of ozone and chilled concrete. Julian led the way down the spiral staircase, the beam of his tactical flashlight cutting through the swirling dust motes like a laser. Clara followed directly behind him, her blue scrubs rustling against the narrow stone walls, while Walter brought up the rear, his eyes constantly scanning the dark corners behind them.
"Watch your footing," Julian whispered over his shoulder, his voice echoing softly in the enclosed space. "The condensation from the cooling pipes makes these steps treacherous."
They descended three levels beneath the ground floor of the mansion, arriving at a heavy steel fire door marked with a yellow biohazard symbol. The electronic keypad beside the handle had been forcibly pried open, exposing a tangle of severed multicolored wires sparking faintly against the metal casing.
Julian knelt beside the damaged panel, running his fingers along the exposed circuitry. "Someone bypassed the security locks from the inside. This wasn't done with standard tools; they used a high-frequency EMP generator to fry the internal logic boards."
Clara leaned over his shoulder, her medical training allowing her to identify the scorched components immediately. "That's military-grade hardware. Standard corporate espionage teams don't carry localized EMP devices unless they're planning to wipe an entire facility's memory banks permanently."
Through the small wired-glass window of the steel door, the soft, rhythmic hum of server racks filled the corridor beyond. Rows of black cabinets blinked with synchronized green indicator lights, illuminating a lone figure standing in front of the central console. Even from a distance, the tailored Italian wool suit and precise posture were unmistakable.
It was Marcus.
He stood with one hand resting casually on the master control keyboard while the other held a secure satellite uplink terminal, transferring gigabytes of encrypted neurological data to an off-site receiver.

"Marcus," Julian called out, his voice carrying clearly through the acoustic seal of the heavy steel door as he pushed it open.
The younger man didn't flinch or show any sign of surprise. He simply stopped typing, straightened his cuffs, and turned slowly around to face them with a calm, almost affectionate smile playing across his lips.
