Chapter 8: Midnight Whispers

Safely hidden deep within the damp, stone-walled wine cellar, the pair caught their breath amidst racks of vintage Bordeaux. The air was cool and smelled of aged oak and damp earth. John pulled out the folded document, checking to make sure it wasn't torn during the scuffle.

"We’re safe for the moment, but Nora will lock down the entire property," Clara said, checking her phone. "No signal down here. We're completely cut off."

John looked at Clara, the dim emergency light casting shadows across her face. For the first time since he broke into the mansion, the aggressive biker persona melted away, revealing the grieving son beneath.

"Why did you help me, Clara?" John asked quietly. "You could have stayed upstairs, kept your job, and pretended you saw nothing."

"Because I watched my own father get cheated out of everything he worked for by people like Nora," Clara answered softly, looking right into his hazel eyes. "Cruelty wins when good people look the other way. I wasn't going to look away."

John nodded slowly, a deep sense of respect forming between them. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the old faded photo from earlier—the one of a young biker holding a baby. He handed it to Clara.

"That baby was me," John whispered. "And the man holding me was the father I thought hated me."
