Chapter 8 - The Ghost of the Past

The chilling sound of that laugh reverberated off the damp stone walls of the underground chamber, freezing Julian in his tracks. The flame of his lighter flickered wildly in the draft as he stared up the dark stone staircase leading back to the mansion above. Footsteps echoed steadily downward, heavy and deliberate, entirely devoid of the frantic panic Eleanor had displayed when the police led her away.
"Surprised to see me, Julian?" a smooth, chillingly calm voice drifted down from the shadows.
A figure stepped into the flickering circle of light at the base of the stairs, smoothing down the front of a tailored jacket. It wasn't Eleanor. It was a man Julian had not seen in over five years—Marcus Vance, Eleanor’s estranged brother, who was legally documented as having died in a tragic overseas boating accident long before Julian ever married into the family.
Julian stumbled backward, his back hitting the rusted iron bars of the cell door as his mind struggled to process the impossible reality standing right in front of him.
"Marcus? You're... you're dead. The police, the death certificate..." Julian stammered, his voice echoing frantically in the confined space.
Marcus let out a dark chuckle, stepping fully into the damp chamber. He looked impeccably dressed, entirely untouched by the years of presumed absence, his dark hair combed back with the exact same severe precision as his sister's.
"Death certificates are remarkably easy to forge when you own half the county judges and coroner's offices," Marcus said smoothly, his eyes scanning the stack of legal documents on the wooden desk with mild amusement. "Eleanor played her part well upstairs, but she was always too emotional, too prone to losing control. That's why she needed a distraction to keep everyone looking at her petty domestic cruelty while the real business of this estate went completely unnoticed."
Julian’s grip on the lighter tightened. He glanced back at the framed photograph of the mysterious woman on the desk, then back to Marcus, the horrifying puzzle pieces finally clicking together in his mind. The abuse, the gaslighting, the fake records—it was all an elaborate smokescreen designed to keep prying eyes away from what was hidden beneath the floorboards.
"What did you do to my daughter's real mother?" Julian demanded, his voice dropping to a dangerous, suppressed growl as he stepped away from the cell door.
Marcus smiled, a slow, predatory expression that didn't reach his cold eyes. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a heavy brass key identical to the one Julian held.
"Your daughter isn't who you think she is, Julian," Marcus whispered, stepping closer. "And neither is the woman upstairs pretending to be a humble maid."

Before Julian could process the warning, the heavy iron door behind him slammed shut with deafening force, and the sound of a deadbolt clicking into place echoed through the dark chamber, plunging Julian into absolute, suffocating darkness.
