Chapter 3 - The Locked Drawer

The sickening sound of fabric tearing broke the heavy tension as Eleanor tumbled awkwardly against the bottom riser of the grand mahogany staircase. Her pristine bun came undone, strands of dark hair falling wildly around her flushed, contorted face. She scrambled upward, her nails clawing at the polished wood, screaming obscenities that completely shattered her aristocratic facade. But Julian did not look back. His long strides carried him up the stairs with relentless speed, his mind racing through years of subtle gaslighting, unexplained absences, and the growing, terrifying distance between himself and his quiet, compliant daughter.

Downstairs, Martha pulled the little girl tightly against her apron, whispering soothing words while keeping her watchful eyes fixed on the staircase. Eleanor pushed herself up, panting heavily, her eyes blazing with a feral intensity. She reached for the heavy leather belt still lying discarded near the base of the stairs, her fingers curling around the brass buckle with murderous intent.

"You've ruined everything, you wretched servant!" Eleanor hissed, raising the strap high above her head as she took a menacing step toward Martha and the child.

Before the heavy leather could descend, a loud, metallic click echoed from the second-floor landing, followed immediately by the sound of a heavy drawer sliding open. Time seemed to stop in the sprawling mansion. Eleanor froze mid-swing, the color completely draining from her face. She dropped the belt, the loud clatter sending vibrations through the hardwood floor once more.

Julian’s silhouette appeared at the top of the stairs. In his hand, he held a small, leather-bound diary with a rusted brass lock that had clearly been forced open. But it wasn't the book that made his hands shake; it was the chilling object resting right beside it on the landing table, illuminated by the pale moonlight streaming through the tall stained-glass window.

It was a pair of blood-stained silver shears, small enough to fit inside a pocket, matching the exact curved width of the angry red scratches on his daughter's face.

Julian slowly raised his head, his eyes locking onto Eleanor with a look of such profound horror and betrayal that it made the temperature in the grand hallway drop instantly.

"Eleanor," Julian whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying calm. "Care to explain why your personal crafting shears are covered in our daughter's blood?"
