Chapter 10 - The Confession in the Dark

The tiny blue flame of Julian’s lighter flickered desperately against the encroaching dampness of the subterranean cell, casting long, writhing shadows across the wet stone walls. He pressed his forehead against the cold iron bars, his breathing heavy and erratic as the reality of his situation set in. He had traded his entire empire, his freedom, and his family's safety for a fabricated illusion crafted by masters of deception. The silence of the underground room was broken only by the faint, muffled sound of footsteps moving overhead, signaling that the conspirators were already executing the final phase of their takeover.
Suddenly, a sharp click echoed from the wall directly beside the iron door. A small, hidden speaker embedded in the masonry crackled to life, emitting a burst of static before Marcus’s smooth, mocking voice filled the cell.
"Comfortable down there, Julian?" Marcus’s voice echoed clearly through the speaker, dripping with condescension. "You always were ambitious, marrying into our family name, building your glittering corporate portfolio on the foundation of assets you never truly earned. Did you really think we would let an outsider inherit the Vance legacy?"
Julian gripped the iron bars, his knuckles turning stark white. "You manipulated everything," Julian shouted into the dark, his voice reverberating off the stone. "The abuse, the girl, the police—it was all an elaborate scam just to seize the estate!"
"Scam is such an ugly word, Julian. Let's call it a hostile corporate restructuring," Marcus replied smoothly, a faint chuckle coming through the speaker. "Eleanor was unstable, yes, but she was a useful instrument to keep you distracted while we audited your personal accounts. Every signature, every deed, every offshore holding you control has been quietly rerouted to a shell corporation over the past twelve months. Right now, your signature is the only thing missing from the final transfer document."
Julian’s blood ran cold. He thought of his private accounts, his corporate holdings, his entire life's work—all systematically dismantled while he sat comfortably in his grand mansion, blind to the shadows moving around him.
"I will never sign it," Julian spat out, his voice shaking with furious resolve. "Even if I rot down here, you won't get my authorization."
A long pause followed over the speaker. Then, the heavy sound of a sliding mechanism echoed from above, followed by a terrifying noise that made Julian’s heart stop entirely—the faint, simulated sound of a child crying out in distress.

"We are very patient, Julian," Marcus whispered coldly. "And the girl—our talented little actress—is quite versatile. Would you like to hear her scream next, or shall we send her down to keep you company in the dark?"
