Chapter 14 - The Final Confrontation on the Tarmac

The screech of tires tearing across the wet asphalt drowned out the thunder as the armored SUV intercepted Marcus’s luxury sedan, slamming its reinforced bumper against the side of the car and forcing it into a violent spin. The sedan skidded across the tarmac before crashing hard against the safety barrier near the edge of the runway, its engine smoking heavily in the pouring rain.

Sarah’s SUV skidded to a halt mere feet away. Before the vehicle had even fully stopped, Sarah threw open her door and leaped out into the torrential downpour, her weapon raised and locked. Julian followed closely behind her, his breath pluming in the cold air as the deafening whine of the private jet's turbines filled the night.

Marcus kicked open the dented door of his sedan and stumbled out onto the tarmac, clutching the heavy cryptographic drive tightly in one hand while brandishing a pistol with the other. Water slicked his dark hair across his forehead, distorting his features into a mask of pure, unadulterated desperation.

"Stay back!" Marcus screamed over the roar of the jet engines, aiming his weapon erratically between Sarah and Julian. "It’s over! The transfer protocols are already executing on that drive! Even if you kill me, the money is gone!"

"Drop the weapon, Marcus!" Sarah shouted back, her voice cutting through the storm with absolute authority, her stance completely unshakable. "You lost years ago. This estate, the accounts, the legacy—it all belongs back where it started."

Marcus laughed hysterically, glancing back toward the open boarding stairs of the private jet idling just twenty yards away. He took a sudden, reckless step backward toward the aircraft, his eyes darting wildly for an escape route.

Julian stepped out from behind the shelter of the SUV, ignoring the rain soaking his ruined grey suit. He looked at Marcus with a cold, piercing clarity that finally stripped the con man of his power.

"You built an empire on lies, Marcus," Julian said, his voice steady and echoing across the tarmac. "And empires built on sand always collapse when the tide comes in."

Furious, Marcus raised his pistol directly at Julian’s chest, his finger tightening on the trigger.

"Then I'll take you down with me!" Marcus roared.

Before Marcus could fire, a sharp crack echoed over the roar of the jet engines. A single round struck the weapon in Marcus’s hand, sending the pistol spinning across the wet asphalt. At the same moment, Sarah closed the distance with terrifying speed, tackling Marcus hard onto the tarmac and pinning him down with a swift, brutal sweep.

The cryptographic drive slipped from Marcus’s fingers, sliding across the wet runway until it came to a complete stop right at Julian’s polished, mud-stained shoes.
