Chapter 1 - The First Strike

The hallway of the sprawling estate echoed with a sharp, terrifying sound that cut through the silence of the evening. Eleanor stood rigidly in her floor-length, elegant beige evening gown, her hair pulled back into a severe, immaculate bun. In her right hand, she gripped a heavy leather belt, the brass buckle gleaming coldly under the crystal chandelier. Her chest heaved with suppressed rage as she glared down at the trembling little girl huddled against the hardwood floor. The child’s face bore fresh, angry red scratches, a silent testimony to a violent struggle that had just taken place moments before.
Before Eleanor could lower the strap for another punishing blow, Martha, the household maid, lunged forward with a desperate gasp. Dressed in her humble brown dress and crisp white apron, Martha threw her own body over the terrified girl, shielding the child from imminent harm. The heavy fabric of Martha’s apron absorbed the initial downward arc of the leather, creating a dull, sickening thud against her shoulder.
Eleanor pulled the belt back, her eyes narrowing into cold slits as she stared down at the defiant servant. Her voice shook with a toxic mixture of aristocratic entitlement and feigned maternal anguish.
"Get away from her, Martha! Move your hands right now!" Eleanor screamed, her voice cracking with fury.
"You can't keep doing this, ma'am! She is just a child, and those scratches are already infected!" Martha yelled back, her voice trembling but resolute as she pressed the little girl tighter against her chest.
"Ow! Hurt my child!" Eleanor shrieked, deliberately twisting the narrative to suit her dark agenda.
"What in God's name is happening in this hallway?"
A deep, commanding voice boomed from the grand staircase behind them. Julian stepped into the light, his tailored grey suit immaculate, his dark hair slightly disheveled. He stared at the chaotic scene in absolute disbelief.
Eleanor immediately dropped the belt, letting it hit the floor with a heavy metallic clatter. She rushed toward Julian, her expression instantly transforming from a raging tyrant to a weeping, fragile victim. She grabbed the lapels of his grey suit, burying her face in his white dress shirt with theatrical sobs.
"Julian, thank goodness you're home. Look at what she did! She attacked our daughter, and when I tried to stop her, Martha attacked me!" Eleanor cried falsely.
Julian looked down at his wife, then his gaze shifted slowly past her shoulder. He locked eyes with Martha, who was still shielding the bruised little girl on the floor. Martha shook her head slowly, her lips moving without sound.

"Julian, check her pocket," Martha whispered fiercely. "Ask her what is inside the locked diary on her vanity."
