Chapter 9: Whispers of New Life

As the weeks passed into late autumn, Clara focused all her energy on her upcoming baby and the completion of the West District shelter. The tension that had surrounded her family for months had finally begun to fade, replaced by a quiet sense of purpose.
One evening, while reviewing blueprint designs in her home library, Clara felt a sudden, sharp pain in her abdomen. She gasped, grabbing the edge of her oak desk as a cold sweat broke out across her forehead.
Her breathing became rapid and shallow. She reached for her phone, but it slid off the desk, falling out of reach beneath the heavy armchair.
"Dad!" she called out, but Arthur was in a meeting across town.
Weakness rushed over her. With remaining strength, she pulled the emergency call cord mounted on the wall near the door—a system installed by her father’s security team.
Ten minutes later, an ambulance sped through the city streets, its sirens blaring against the night air.
Inside the hospital’s private wing, Arthur arrived breathless, his silver cane clicking rapidly against the polished floor. Outside the delivery wing, he found Julian already standing near the waiting room, looking anxious and pale.
"Julian?" Arthur asked, surprised to see him. "What are you doing here?"
"I was volunteering at the shelter site down the street when the alarm went off on the security feed," Julian explained quickly. "I ran straight here. How is she? How is the baby?"
The doctor stepped out from behind the double doors, pulling off his surgical mask. He gave them a reassuring smile.

"She’s stable," the doctor announced. "It was severe exhaustion caused by stress, but both mother and child are perfectly safe. She needs rest, quiet, and care."
Arthur let out a long, heavy breath of relief, leaning heavily on his cane. He looked at Julian, seeing the genuine concern written across the young man's face.
