Chapter 7: Shadows in the Boardroom
The glass-walled boardroom on the top floor of the Sterling Tower was filled with lawyers, board members, and journalists. Marcus Vance sat at the far end of the long conference table, surrounded by his legal team. He wore a bitter smile, confident that his legal maneuver would force Arthur Sterling into giving him a multi-million-dollar buyout.
The heavy double doors opened, and Clara walked in. She wore an elegant burgundy maternity blazer, her dark hair pulled back neatly. Beside her walked her father, who took a seat at the head of the table.
"Mr. Sterling," Marcus began smugly, clearing his throat. "We can settle this zoning dispute quietly today. All it takes is a minor financial restructuring of our previous joint venture, and Vance Enterprises will release all claims on the West District land."
Clara leaned forward, resting her hands flat on the table.
"Mr. Vance," Clara spoke, her voice calm, clear, and ringing with absolute authority. "You believe you hold leverage because your family owned the original deed to that property thirty years ago. What your lawyers failed to check is the public registry update from last night."
She nodded to her legal advisor, who distributed a stack of official documents to everyone in the room.
"Two hours ago," Clara continued, "the Sterling Foundation acquired the full debt portfolio of Vance Enterprises from your primary lender. We are now your chief creditor."
Marcus’s face turned pale white. "What? You can't do that!"
"We can, and we did," Clara said coolly. "As of nine o'clock this morning, Vance Enterprises is in default. We now own the land, the building rights, and every subsidiary attached to your firm."

The room went completely silent. Marcus slumped back into his leather chair, utterly defeated.
"However," Clara added, her tone softening slightly, "unlike your family, I do not believe in destroying people for sport. The company will be restructured into an employee-owned cooperative. You will step down with a modest pension, and the land in the West District will be permanently deeded to the homeless shelter today."
