Over the next few weeks, the quiet estate changed. The cold, sterile routine of physical therapy was replaced by afternoon sessions on the back porch. Arthur hired a local contractor to renovate the old mineral spring on the edge of the property, turning it into a small, warm therapeutic pool.
Leo came by every day after school. He didn't ask for money or favors; he simply sat by the pool, encouraging Emily as she practiced stepping across the warm water.
