Chapter 1: The First Step

The air was heavy with the smell of rain and wet gravel. Inside the metal tub, Emily’s small feet shifted through the cold water, her toes feeling the solid basin beneath her. For three long years, her legs had felt like ghost limbs—distant, unresponsive, and heavy. But as the small, shivering boy held her arm steady, a faint warmth surged through her heels.
Her father, Arthur, stood frozen under the harsh golden lights of the estate entryway. His hands, usually tight with authority, trembled at his sides. He couldn't speak. He had spent millions on top surgeons across the globe, yet here was his daughter, standing without her crutches, guided by a boy who wore torn shoes and a faded grey shirt. ""Emily..."" Arthur whispered again, his voice cracking against the quiet drizzle.
""Look, Dad,"" Emily sobbed softly, wiping her cheeks with the back of her sleeve. ""He didn't hurt me. He told me the water would feel lighter if I stopped being afraid."" The guards behind Arthur exchanged quick, bewildered glances. The boy, whose name was Leo, looked up at Arthur with clear, steady hazel eyes, unbothered by the wealth or the anger surrounding him.
