Chapter 8

The tense silence in the ballroom was broken only by the crackle of melting tallow and Clara’s shallow, exhausted breathing. Arthur remained standing like a monolith at the head of the dining table, his protective stance offering an unyielding barrier between the frightened child and the fractured elite. Julian Vance sat collapsed in his chair, defeated by his own arrogant outburst, while the remaining guests whispered anxiously among themselves, desperate to distance their names from the impending catastrophe.
"The ledger," Arthur demanded, his voice cutting through the murmurs with absolute finality. He looked directly at Senator Cole, knowing the politician was too pragmatic to go down for a shipping mogul’s crimes. "You audit the board’s secondary accounts, Thomas. Where is the physical documentation of the facility?"
Senator Cole hesitated, his calculating eyes darting toward the locked oak doors before meeting Arthur’s unblinking stare. The politician recognized that the game was over; refusing to cooperate now would mean sharing Julian’s fate as an accessory to corporate atrocities. With slow, deliberate movements, Cole reached inside the inner pocket of his tailored jacket and withdrew a thick, leather-bound book secured with a brass clasp.
"It’s all in here," Cole said quietly, placing the ledger gently onto the polished mahogany surface, pushing it a few inches toward Arthur. "Names, asset transfers, facility coordinates... and the termination orders. Julian initiated the security protocol when the girl uncovered the storage wing."
Arthur reached out with one hand, carefully picking up the heavy book while keeping his other arm securely wrapped around Clara. The leather was cold against his palm—a tangible record of decades of corruption hidden beneath the gleaming facade of the Sterling empire. He didn't need to open the pages to know the damage it would cause; the mere existence of the book was a guillotine waiting to drop on every corrupt life seated at this table.
"You're destroying us all, Arthur," Julian muttered bitterly, staring into his empty crystal glass as if searching for an escape that no longer existed.

"I am cleaning house," Arthur corrected him, his voice echoing with cold resolve. He looked back at the lead guard near the doors. "Open the comms. Call federal authorities and federal marshals specifically. Tell them to secure the coordinates listed in this ledger immediately."
The guard nodded, finally breaking away from his compromised allegiance to execute the order. Clara pressed her face against Arthur’s shoulder, her breathing finally beginning to slow as she sensed the shift in power. The darkness that had hunted her through the estate was retreating, beaten back by the unyielding will of an old man who had finally decided to face his own demons.
