Chapter 10

The massive oak doors of the grand ballroom shuddered before swinging wide open, flooding the opulent space with the harsh, sterile light of federal authorities and armed marshals in tactical gear. The transition from elite gala to crime scene was instantaneous. Lead investigators moved through the room with disciplined efficiency, securing the perimeter, taking statements, and immediately taking Julian Vance into custody as he was yanked roughly from his velvet chair.
Arthur stood his ground at the head of the long dining table, still holding Clara securely against his chest. The federal lead investigator, a sharp-eyed woman with silver-streaked hair and a heavy badge pinned to her tactical vest, approached the table with measured steps. Her gaze flickered from Arthur’s stern face down to the little girl in the blood-stained white dress, before finally resting on the leather-bound ledger held tightly in Arthur's hand.
"Mr. Sterling, I presume?" the investigator asked, her voice professional and authoritative.
"I am," Arthur replied, extending the heavy book toward her. "This ledger contains every transaction, coordinate, and directive connected to the facility beneath the docks. My associates here will cooperate fully with your investigation."
The investigator took the ledger, her expression tightening as she flipped open the cover to scan the initial pages. She signaled two officers to secure Senator Cole and Elizabeth Croft, who offered no physical resistance, knowing that survival now depended entirely on immediate compliance. The illusion of untouchable wealth had been utterly shattered by the harsh light of accountability.
"We received the dispatch regarding the subterranean facility," the investigator said, looking back up at Arthur. "Medical teams and rescue units are already descending down there. We need to get this little girl checked by a professional immediately."
Arthur nodded slowly, though his grip on Clara remained firm, as if letting go would somehow invite the darkness back in. He looked down at the child, who gazed back at him with a mixture of lingering fear and nascent trust. The physical wounds on her temple would heal, and the crimson stain on her dress would eventually become a distant memory, but the bond forged in the fires of this harrowing night would remain unbreakable.

"Can you walk with me, Clara?" Arthur asked gently, his deep voice softening as he addressed her directly.
Clara gave a small, hesitant nod, her little feet touching the polished mahogany floor for the first time since the ordeal began. She reached out and grabbed Arthur’s thumb with her small hand, anchoring herself to his strength as they prepared to walk out of the ruined ballroom together, leaving the remnants of a corrupt empire behind them in the dust.
