Chapter 6

The metallic echo of the bolted oak doors hung heavily in the air, transforming the opulent ballroom into a suffocating pressure cooker. Julian Vance stumbled backward, his manicured hands gripping the edge of the mahogany table as his breath came in short, ragged gasps. The polite veneer of corporate aristocracy had vanished, leaving behind the primal panic of a cornered animal.

"Arthur, you're losing your mind," Julian stammered, his voice cracking under the intense scrutiny of the room. "The girl is delusional. She’s been subjected to experimental stress protocols; her mind is fractured. She doesn't know what she's pointing at!"

"Keep your mouth shut, Julian," Arthur replied, his tone chillingly flat. He remained standing at the head of the table, holding Clara securely against his chest. The child had buried her face back into his shoulder, her quiet weeping the only sound cutting through the tense silence. "You reacted before I even named a name. How did you know she was pointing at you unless you already knew what she saw?"

A collective intake of breath rippled through the surrounding guests. Senator Cole narrowed his eyes, shifting subtly away from Julian as the political alliances of the room began to fracture in real time. Self-preservation was the foundational law of this elite circle, and Julian had just exposed his soft underbelly to the pack.

"This is madness," Elizabeth Croft whispered, clutching her pearl necklace as if it were a lifeline. "Arthur, we are your friends, your peers. You cannot hold us hostage over the ravings of a damaged child."

"Friends don't fund underground compliance facilities hidden beneath our shipping docks, Elizabeth," Arthur shot back, his eyes flashing with lethal clarity. The words hit the room like a physical blow. The secret was out. The dark foundation upon which their collective fortunes were built had finally been dragged into the harsh light of the grand ballroom.

Arthur’s mind raced through the decades of blind trust he had placed in his associates. He had focused on expanding the Sterling empire, leaving the day-to-day operations of the conglomerate's peripheral ventures to Julian and his inner circle. In that blind spot, atrocities had been committed in his name, funded by his capital, and protected by his reputation. Holding this room captive wasn't just about protecting Clara; it was about tearing out the rot from his own legacy, no matter how much blood it cost him.
