Chapter 5: The Lockdown

With a swift and decisive motion, Arthur stepped away from the dining chair, holding Clara tightly against his shoulder as the full weight of the crisis settled over the grand ballroom. The terrified murmurs of the guests amplified into anxious whispers, the polished facade of high society completely dissolving into chaotic uncertainty.
"Is he in this room?" Arthur asked, his voice low, urgent, and vibrating with suppressed fury as he looked down at the trembling little girl.
Clara slowly lifted her tear-stained face from his shoulder, her wide, frightened eyes scanning the sea of elegantly dressed men and women standing around the long dining table. Her gaze lingered on the crystal settings, the half-empty wine glasses, and the expensive jewelry catching the cold electric brilliance of the chandelier. Her breathing hitched, a tiny gasp escaping her bruised lips as a flicker of profound recognition crossed her pale features. She did not speak, but her small, trembling hand rose slowly from Arthur's lapel, extending a single, trembling finger toward the far side of the table.
Arthur’s eyes followed the trajectory of her small hand, locking instantly onto the pale, sweating face of Julian Vance. The shipping mogul’s composure shattered entirely under the weight of the accusation, his breath catching in his throat as he pushed his chair back with a loud, jarring screech against the mahogany floor.
"Lock the doors!" Arthur shouted fiercely, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings with absolute, terrifying authority. "No one at this table leaves!"

Instantly, the heavy oak doors at the far end of the grand ballroom slammed shut with a resounding thud, the automated heavy iron bolts sliding into place with a mechanical finality. The guards in black suits and bowties froze, their allegiance suddenly thrown into utter disarray as the perimeter of the room became an impenetrable fortress.
Panic erupted among the remaining guests. Several people stood up simultaneously, shouting objections and demanding explanations, but Arthur’s commanding presence silenced them instantly. He stood immovable at the head of the table, shielding Clara with his own body while holding the entire criminal underworld of the estate captive in a single room. The reckoning had finally arrived, and there was nowhere left for the cowards to run.
