Chapter 7

The weight of Arthur’s revelation pressed down on the grand ballroom like an physical mass. The candlelight flickered wildly as a sudden, cold draft swept through the soaring windows, sending long, skeletal shadows dancing across the elegant crystal glasses and half-eaten courses. Julian Vance realized the walls were closing in, his facade of innocence completely stripped away. He sank back into his velvet chair, sweat beading heavily on his forehead, his chest heaving as he stared down at his trembling hands.

"You think you’re so righteous, Arthur," Julian sneered, his voice dropping its aristocratic polish to reveal a bitter, venomous edge. "You sit at the head of this table, enjoying the fruits of a global empire, while pretending your hands are clean. Where do you think the capital came from to fund your philanthropic ventures? Who do you think managed the logistics when things got... complicated?"

"I never authorized this," Arthur said, his voice deadly quiet, though every muscle in his frame was tensed for violence.

"You didn't have to," Julian countered with a hysterical laugh. "Ignorance was your favorite luxury, Arthur. You signed the ledgers without looking at the itemized columns because you didn't want to know the cost. But the world doesn't run on charity and clean ethics. The child saw the ledger room. She saw what happens to those who try to back out of the shipping contracts."

Clara whimpered softly at the mention of the room, her small fingers clutching Arthur’s jacket with renewed panic. Arthur felt a surge of white-hot fury course through his veins. He tightened his embrace, whispering gentle reassurances into her messy blonde hair before turning his fierce, unblinking gaze back to the shipping mogul.

"It ends tonight, Julian," Arthur stated, stepping forward with deliberate slowness, holding the frightened girl as though she were the most precious object in existence.

The guards in black suits watched the exchange, their rigid posture faltering as they realized their paymaster was finished. Senator Cole slowly raised his hands, signaling a cautious surrender as the political fallout of Julian’s confession threatened to swallow them all. The illusion of absolute power had evaporated, leaving only accountability in its wake. Arthur knew he had to secure physical evidence before the night was over, but first, he needed to ensure the sanctuary he offered Clara could not be breached by anyone left breathing in this room.
