Chapter 6: Shadows of the Past

Late into the night, as Lily slept peacefully, Claire sat by the window watching the city lights. Her mind drifted back to the day she met David in college—a gentle, thoughtful young man before the crushing weight of his family’s expectations changed him into a silent shadow.
When Claire got pregnant, Eleanor had insisted on controlling every aspect of their lives. She pushed Claire into signing a prenup, dictated where they lived, and subtly reminded Claire daily that she was merely a temporary vessel for the Sterling heir. When Lily was born with a congenital heart ailment, Eleanor treated the condition as a family embarrassment to be hidden away rather than healed.
Claire remembered the agonizing nights spent praying over Lily’s crib, feeling completely powerless against the vast wealth and legal intimidation of the Sterling empire. But real love does not calculate odds; it simply endures until it finds a way to overcome.

A quiet knock on the hospital room door broke her reverie. The door pushed open slowly, revealing David. He looked disheveled, his suit jacket wrinkled, his eyes red-rimmed with shame.
He stood in the doorway, afraid to step further, looking at Claire and then at his sleeping daughter. “Claire...” he whispered, his voice cracking. “I’m so sorry.”
