Chapter 4: A Father’s Awakening

David Sterling sat in his high-rise office downtown, staring at a glass of untouched scotch. His phone had been ringing incessantly for thirty minutes. When he finally answered, his mother’s frantic voice cut through the speaker, demanding that he call his corporate attorneys immediately to suppress the federal investigation.

David closed his eyes. For years, he had been the dutiful son, weak-willed and terrified of disappointing his formidable mother. He had stood by while Eleanor demeaned Claire, rationalizing that staying silent kept the peace and secured Lily’s future wealth. He had believed his mother when she said Lily’s treatments were being handled by top specialists overseas.

“David! Are you listening to me?” Eleanor shrieked over the line. “Claire has destroyed us! She went to the authorities! You need to release a statement immediately denying her accusations!”

David looked at a small framed photograph on his desk—a picture of Lily taken two years ago, her eyes wide and trusting. He remembered how frail she had looked earlier that evening when his mother had pulled the cake away from her.

“Mom,” David said, his voice flat and hollow. “Is it true? Did you take Lily’s medical trust?”

A momentary silence on the other end was all the answer he needed. “It was an investment, David! For the company! For your inheritance!”

“My daughter was suffering,” David whispered, tears welling in his eyes as the weight of his cowardice crashed over him. “I’m not calling the attorneys for you, Mom. I’m going to the hospital.” He hung up the phone and walked out, leaving his corporate empire behind.
