Chapter 13: The First Real Birthday

On a sunny Saturday afternoon, the backyard of the craftsman home was filled with colorful balloons, paper lanterns, and the sound of children playing tag. It was Lily’s sixth birthday—her first real celebration in freedom.
Neighborhood kids ran across the green lawn, their laughter echoing against the wooden fence. Doctor Rostova was there, wearing a floral summer dress, enjoying lemonade on the porch with Claire. David was by the grill, happily burning hot dogs while wearing a chef’s apron that Lily had hand-painted for him.
At four o’clock, Claire brought out the birthday cake. It wasn't an intimidating, multi-tiered fondant sculpture made by elite caterers. It was a homemade vanilla cake covered in bright pink frosting and uneven rainbow sprinkles, crafted by Claire and Lily together.
As the crowd sang ""Happy Birthday,"" Lily stood in front of the table, her eyes wide with unadulterated joy. She didn't look scared or small anymore; she stood confident, surrounded by people who loved her unconditionally.

“Make a wish, sweet pea!” David called out from the porch, smiling warmly at Claire.
Lily closed her eyes, took a deep breath with her strong, healthy lungs, and blew out all six candles in one powerful puff. Everyone cheered, and Claire pulled her daughter into a tight, warm hug, kissing her rosy cheek.
