Chapter 11: Behind Bars

Two weeks after the surgery, while Lily was recovering comfortably at a specialized rehabilitation villa paid for by the court-supervised trust, Claire drove down to the county correctional facility. She had received multiple letters from Eleanor’s legal team requesting a meeting.
The visiting room was sterile, separated by thick glass windows. Eleanor sat on the opposite side, wearing an orange jumpsuit. Her signature silver hair was unstyled, her posture slumped, and the sharp arrogance that once ruled her demeanor had withered into bitter resentment.
“Are you satisfied, Claire?” Eleanor said through the intercom, her voice dry and crackling. “You tore this family apart. David won't speak to me. The company is in receivership. My name is dragged through the mud every night on the news.”
Claire picked up the receiver and looked at the woman who had made her life a living hell for years. But looking at her now, Claire felt no anger, no triumph, and no malice. She felt only a deep, profound pity.
“You tore this family apart yourself, Eleanor,” Claire said calmly. “You thought money and reputation could substitute for human compassion. I didn't come here to gloat. I came to tell you that Lily’s surgery was successful. She is going to live a long, healthy life.”

Eleanor flinched slightly, her gaze dropping to the steel table. “She... she is well?”
“She is thriving,” Claire replied gently. “And despite everything you did, I will make sure she knows that true strength comes from forgiveness, not cruelty. I hope one day you find peace with yourself, Eleanor.” Claire placed the phone back on its hook and walked out, leaving the shadows of the past behind forever.
