Chapter 5: The Hospital Room
The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia was bright, warm, and filled with gentle pastel colors. Unlike the sterile, intimidating atmosphere Eleanor had described whenever medical care was mentioned, this place felt alive with hope. Doctor Elena Rostova, a world-renowned pediatric cardiologist, reviewed Lily’s files with intense focus while Claire sat beside the hospital bed.
Lily was already wearing soft cotton pajamas, sound asleep under a colorful dinosaur blanket, hooked up to a gentle heart monitor that beeped in a comforting rhythm.
“The delay was significant, Mrs. Sterling,” Dr. Rostova said quietly, leaning against the examination desk. “Her ventricular defect should have been repaired months ago. But because you brought her here today, and because the federal foundation has unblocked her direct medical reserve, we can operate on Thursday.”
Claire let out a long, shuddering breath, pressing her trembling fingers against her mouth. Tears streamed down her cheeks, but for the first time, they were tears of immense relief.

Dr. Rostova smiled gently, reaching out to place a reassuring hand on Claire’s shoulder. “She is a fighter, Claire. And more importantly, she has a mother who fought the whole world to get her here in time. She’s going to be just fine.”
