Chapter 7: Sanctuary and Suspicion

The slamming screen door of the Miller residence three houses down provided a brief, desperate sanctuary. Mrs. Miller, an elderly retired teacher who had known Elena since childhood, gasped in horror when she opened her door to find the battered family standing on her porch. Lily was sobbing softly, her hair unevenly shorn, while Toby panted heavily and Elena leaned against the doorframe, wincing in agony from her sprained ankle.
"Oh, my word, Elena! What on earth happened?" Mrs. Miller cried, ushering them inside into the warm, brightly lit foyer and immediately fetching a bag of frozen peas for Elena’s swollen ankle and a glass of water for Lily.
"Clara... she's lost her mind," Elena managed to say between breaths, dialing 911 on her cell phone now that they were out of the signal jammer's range. "She poisoned my father, she tried to drug my kids, and she attacked us in our own home."
Within ten minutes, the wailing sirens of two police cruisers and an ambulance cut through the quiet suburban night, flashing red and blue lights against the brick facades of the neighborhood. Officer Davis, a seasoned local cop who recognized Elena from community events, stepped inside the Miller home, taking notes as Elena recounted the harrowing details of the afternoon.
"She's still in my house, Officer. She has records, journals, proof of what she did to my father," Elena insisted, gripping the arm of the sofa.
Officer Davis exchanged a grave look with his partner. "We'll go over there right now and secure the premises, Elena. You stay here with the kids and the paramedics. We'll make sure she's taken care of."

True to his word, the officers marched down the driveway toward Elena’s house, flashlights cutting beams through the dark. But as they approached the front door, they found it unlocked and swinging slightly in the breeze. Inside, the house was completely dark. The living room was pristine—the wrapped gifts sat neatly on the table, the untouched birthday cake rested on the patio, and the journals Elena had discovered in the den were entirely gone. Clara was nowhere to be found.
When Officer Davis returned twenty minutes later to report that the house was empty, Elena felt a cold dread settle in her stomach. Clara hadn't fled; she had simply retreated into the shadows, waiting for the right moment to reclaim what she believed was hers.
