Chapter 11: The Turning Point

Upstairs in the hallway, Toby paced anxiously back and forth in front of the coat closet. Ten minutes had passed since Elena descended into the dark shaft. The silence from below was deafening.

"Lily, stay right here," Toby whispered, his voice trembling as he picked up a heavy brass candlestick from the console table.

"Toby, don't go down there! Mom said to stay!" Lily cried, tears welling in her eyes again.

"I have to check on her," Toby insisted. He pulled open the closet door and peered down into the black abyss of the shaft. "Mom!" he called out, his voice echoing into the darkness. There was no immediate answer, only the muffled sound of a struggle drifting up from the subterranean bunker.

Without thinking twice, Toby swung his legs over the edge of the panel and began climbing down the rusted ladder as fast as his arms could carry him, the heavy brass candlestick clutched tightly in his left hand.

Down in the bunker, Elena was struggling desperately against Clara’s iron grip. The older woman had pressed her back against the concrete wall, the cold blade of the scalpel hovering dangerously close to Elena's cheek.

"Let her go!" a young voice echoed from the ladder.

Clara paused, looking up just as Toby’s boots hit the concrete floor. The boy charged forward with a ferocity that caught Clara completely off guard, swinging the heavy brass candlestick and striking Clara squarely across the forearm.

Clara gasped in pain, dropping the scalpel as her arm went limp. The weapon clattered loudly against the concrete floor.

"Toby, run!" Elena screamed, freeing herself from Clara’s loosened grip with a violent shove that sent the older woman stumbling backward against a shelf of amber medicine bottles. Glass shattered in a cacophony of breaking seals as several bottles crashed to the floor, releasing a pungent, chemical cloud of sterilizing fluid into the confined space of the bunker.

"You foolish boy," Clara hissed, clutching her bruised arm, her sinister smile finally fracturing into a mask of pure, unadulterated rage as she lunged toward the fallen scalpel on the floor.

"Grab the journals!" Elena yelled to her son, snatching up the stack of leather-bound books and historical ledgers from the oak table.

Toby didn't hesitate. He scooped up a handful of the Polaroid photographs and turned toward the ladder, his heart pounding in his ears. Elena grabbed his shoulder, guiding him upward ahead of her as Clara scrambled frantically across the broken glass on the floor, reaching out a clawed hand toward their ankles.
