Chapter 2: Shadows in the Sunroom

The chaotic birthday party dissolved into a grim silence as neighbors, alerted by the commotion, peered from behind adjacent fences before retreating hastily. Elena guided Lily and Toby into the house, locking the back sliding glass door behind them. The interior was bathed in the cool, filtered light of the sunroom. Toby sat on the edge of the floral sofa, still clutching his tablet as if it were a shield, his breathing shallow and rapid. Elena knelt in front of Lily, gently brushing stray blonde locks from her daughter's forehead, inspecting the jagged, uneven chop Clara had inflicted.

"Toby, give me the tablet," Elena said gently, extending a trembling hand.

The boy hesitated, his eyes darting toward the hallway where the muffled sound of Clara’s footsteps could be heard moving across the hardwood floors. "Mom, you need to see what else is on here," Toby whispered, his voice trembling. He pressed play on a video file. The screen illuminated their pale faces with a cold, blue glow. It was recorded from the kitchen window earlier that afternoon. The footage showed Clara standing by the kitchen counter, casually crushing several small white pills into the carton of heavy cream destined for the birthday cake's frosting. Elena’s breath hitched in her throat, a cold wave of realization washing over her spine. Clara wasn't just eccentric or emotionally unstable; she was systematically poisoning them.

Before Elena could process the gravity of the pharmaceutical sabotage, the sunroom door clicked open. Clara stepped inside, her floral blouse immaculate, her silver earrings catching the light. She moved with an eerie, predatory grace, entirely unbothered by the confrontation in the yard.

"Elena, darling, you really shouldn't rush home from work like that. You look exhausted," Clara said, her voice dripping with a sickening, faux-maternal sweetness. She took a step closer, completely ignoring the children. "And the girl’s hair was simply getting too heavy for her. Tradition requires a shedding of past identities before true transformation can occur."

Elena stood up slowly, positioning herself protectively in front of Lily and Toby. "Get out of my house, Clara," Elena commanded, her voice steady despite the adrenaline roaring in her ears. "We are done playing your games. Pack your bags and leave right now, or I will call the police and have you removed in handcuffs."
