Chapter 5: Fortress of Pillows

Upstairs, the heavy oak door of Toby’s bedroom shook as someone rattled the handle from the outside. Inside, Toby and Lily huddled together in a makeshift fort constructed from couch cushions, blankets, and mattresses pulled off the twin beds. Lily clutched a stuffed rabbit to her chest, her eyes wide with terror as she stared at the trembling door handle.

"Is she coming to get us, Toby?" Lily whimpered, her voice barely a whisper.

"No. Mom is coming. She told us to stay here, and I'm not opening this door for anyone," Toby replied, trying desperately to keep his voice from cracking, though he was terrified. He held his tablet in one hand, having already dialed 911, though the screen indicated no cellular service. The house was dead silent regarding outside communication—Clara must have installed a signal jammer in the attic.

Suddenly, the rattling stopped. A key slid smoothly into the bedroom lock.

Toby froze. He hadn't known Clara had a key to his room, too. The brass mechanism turned with a heavy click, and the door swung open slowly on its hinges. Clara stepped into the room, her expression once again warm and deceptively gentle, though her floral blouse was slightly ruffled from the scuffle downstairs.

"Toby, darling, put that toy down," Clara said softly, walking toward the pillow fort. "Your mother is having a bit of a medical episode downstairs. She's confused, and she needs to rest. I need you and your sister to come with me to the guest suite so we can keep you safe."

"Stay away from us!" Toby yelled, scrambling backward and pulling Lily behind him. "We saw what you did! We know about the pills!"

Clara sighed, a sound of profound disappointment. "Such a shame. I expected better analytical skills from an eleven-year-old. You're just like your mother—defiant, emotional, and utterly blind to the greater good."

Suddenly, heavy footsteps echoed up the staircase. "Clara! Get away from my children!" Elena shouted, appearing at the bedroom threshold, breathless and disheveled, holding a heavy iron fireplace poker she had grabbed from the downstairs hearth.

Clara spun around, her eyes flashing with sudden, calculated malice. Instead of retreating, Clara lunged forward with surprising speed, grabbing a heavy ceramic lamp off the bedside table and hurling it directly at Elena. The lamp shattered against the doorframe, spraying porcelain shrapnel across the room and forcing Elena to duck. In that split second of evasion, Clara darted past her into the hallway, locking the bedroom door from the outside with a sharp twist of the key, trapping Elena inside with the children.
